Art, reality (witnessed) pictures. Created art based on simplified, large-small-format, mixed colors but black/white and effects-dominated photographs. The world, in general, reflected and cerebral, with pictorial means simplified in order to create a kind of elemental impact. Rothko and Newman, among others, spoke of a goal to achieve the sublime rather than the beautiful, back to the heroic vision in opposition to a calming or comforting effect.

Legendary Imitation

The Tree (Aaron Siskind)
In 1952, renowned photographer Aaron Siskind directed an IIT class in a photographic investigation of Sullivan buildings. Around 60 structures were captured in the work of the students and Siskind, who then mounted the images in a 1954 exhibit. Read more.
